What do you wear when it feels like you’re standing just a few steps away from the sun? One of my rules for dressing during a heatwave is to prioritize breathability and comfort without sacrificing style.

It may be the early days of summer, but temperatures across the country have already hit triple digits. Heatwaves are becoming a regular occurrence this season. Embrace loose, flowing silhouettes that move with you and evoke effortlessness. Styles made from soft cotton, cooling linen, and moisture-wicking bamboo fabric will not only help with regulating your body heat but also provide some protection against the sun’s rays, because in the cases of extreme heat, fabric is essential. (Of course, you should limit extended sun exposure and apply sunscreen.) I’m a big fan of oversized button downs in cotton and linen because they are super breathable, lightweight, and soft, making it the most comfortable choice for staying cool. Another benefit of natural fibers is that they are better for you and the planet, natural fibers are more durable and don’t contribute to microplastic pollution, which is definitely worth considering.

I love styling a cropped white cotton tee from the Gap with a cotton maxi skirt for a laid-back and breezy look. Breezy cotton T-shirts and loose linen button-ups will be key in keeping you from turning into a pool of sweat.

If the heatwave can’t stop your desire to mix and match, you can’t go wrong with a flowy skirt. A-line, flared, and bubble-hem styles are perfect for beating the heat and look just as good with a tailored tank top and flip-flops as they do with a loose blouse and kitten heels.
